Civil Youth on Their New Album, Working With Bradley Walden of Emarosa and More!

I didn’t get a chance to cover the show when Civil Youth came through Columbus on 6/29 due to my dog having to have surgery, but I was granted this really awesome interview! Check it out!

Conversations explores some pretty deep subjects.  On your website it’s described as an album that describes conversations you’ve had with your past and future selves.  People that you were, or people you want to be.  You all had to dig deep and it shows.  What was the hardest thing for you to write about?

For me (Mike) when I’m writing lyrics I’m always writing about something that plagues me. To pick one topic or even event isn’t really possible for me because the album as a whole is a journey of me overcoming things in stages.

You guys got to work on the song Let You In with Bradley Walden of Emarosa.  What was that like?

Bradley is a super relaxed and talented person which made the process really easy. We described what the song was about and the album as a whole and we really let him have creative control over his verse. He came back with what you heard and we put it right in. No ifs ands or buts. Would love to do a tour with him and become closer friends for sure.

Who would you like to work with in the future?

Hayley Williams of Paramore. Best front woman or man alive right now. Period.

You guys just wrapped up your album release tour and I’m sure that came with some amazing moments.  What was your favorite moment of the tour?

I think one of our favorite moments was when we were in Portland, OR and there was a show going on above our heads in the bigger room. It was sold out and ours wasn’t. To be honest, the locals who played with us really didn’t draw anyone at all. We got on stage and started playing and literally half the people from upstairs came down to watch us and stayed the entire time. They went out of their minds and it turned out to be one of the best crowds all tour.

What would be your dream tour?

Biffy Clyro, Paramore, and 30 Seconds to Mars. Easy.

What is the song you’re most requested to play at shows?

I think Between Me & You is usually up there. People really seem to love the chorus and are always singing along with it.

Which song do you believe will ultimately be fan favorite from Conversations?

Between Me & You or Let You In depending on if you like Pop music or the heavier side.

If you could go back in time and give one bit of advice to yourselves what would it be.

Don’t give a damn what people think. Their opinions won’t matter when we’re all 6 feet deep.

What’s next for you guys?

Saving the world from devastation and bad coffee.
